Jane Austen
Jane Austen (1775-1817) provided the novels that have served for some of the more elegant period pieces of cinema. Pride and Prejudice has been told and retold countless time. Emma? Sense and Sensibility? More of Austen's classics at play. Austen's novels tended to focus on the class struggles of her time. Provincial towns where the middle-class were looking to move up as the upper crust were not going to step down a notch without a fight. Austen's success in capturing the aristocratic struggles were done with subtle touches that married romance, irony and existentialism into epic familial bouts of the early 19th century.
